***I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Titles and cover art strongly influence my choices of books. I enjoy the element of uniqueness in both aspects, and this book definitely incorporated that. The title intrigued me and I hoped to have it explained somewhere in the story. I was not disappointed.
This was a tough book to read because of subject matter. Though I personally have not suffered any type of abuse, thankfully; the main character (Ember) went through several episodes of physical, sexual, and verbal abuse in the worst kind. The most heartbreaking thing was, the person inflicting this abuse on her was the one individual she thought she could trust more than anyone in the world–her husband. It was an emotional roller coaster to say the least.
The pace was fairly steady throughout but really picked up toward the middle, and moved forward in an edge-of-your-seat pace from there. The scenes were vividly described and the ending was quite satisfying. I would like to have had a little more description of the characters to be able to envision them better, but the story line was engaging and exciting enough to keep me turning pages.
This was a gripping debut novel. I recommend it to readers who enjoy gritty romantic suspense stories (due to the sensitive subject matter and graphic scenes).
