Saving Avery is a harrowing, behind-the-scenes look at an abusive marriage. The characters are portrayed with such conviction and authenticity, readers will sympathize with the victims as if they know them personally. Being a woman–one who has fortunately never been affected by abuse–many of the scenes were unfathomable and painful to read. It’s too easy for an outsider to say, “Just leave the jerk,” and many situations are more possible to escape than others, I’m sure. But in this story, the main character, Avery, simply had no options. It was a matter of life and death for her and many others.
It was riveting to experience how the author tied all the backstories on the characters together in one, anything-but-neat little package as the story unfolded. The writing was compelling and genuine, though I truly hope this author has never suffered any of the horrendous acts described in this tale.
I commend this author for having the courage to write about such a sensitive subject, and for the flawless execution of a story that needs to be told to perhaps help others who are suffering, find their own inner savior.
